A big storm just moved through, and your roof took the brunt of it. Take a breath. What you do in the next few days protects both your home and your insurance claim, and none of it requires panic or a handshake with the first door-knocker who shows up.

1. Make Sure Everyone Is Safe

Before anything else, check that your family is safe and stay clear of downed lines or hanging limbs. If water is actively coming in, move belongings and put down buckets, but do not climb onto the roof yourself. That is our job, and it is not worth the risk.

2. Document What You Can from the Ground

Walk the perimeter of your home with your phone and photograph anything obvious: shingles in the yard, dented gutters, debris, water stains on ceilings. Note the date and time. This early documentation is genuinely useful when it comes time to file.

3. Do Not Sign Anything on the Spot

Storm chasers move fast and push hard. A legitimate, local roofer is completely fine with you taking a day to think and to get a free inspection in writing. High-pressure "sign today" tactics are the single biggest red flag.

4. Get a Free, Honest Inspection

Most storm damage, especially hail, is hard to see from the ground. A professional inspection tells you whether you actually have damage worth filing on. If you do not, a good roofer will tell you that too.

5. Let Your Roofer Handle the Claim

Once you decide to file, the right roofer carries the load: documentation, meeting your adjuster on the roof, reviewing the approved scope, and supplementing anything legitimate that was missed. You make the decisions; they do the heavy lifting.

Storm Damage You Want Looked At?
